From an ethnically motivated war to a war of resources. The end of the Cold War presented developing countries or the new Fourth World with a new set of ‘worst-case scenarios’, in which the conflict was over who controlled the land and the valuable raw materials so essential to world trade. The civilian population suffered extreme brutality, and among the most affected were the young. For some of them, sport offers a way out.

TIM HETHERINGTON (England, 1970)
After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in Classics and English Literature, he worked as an editor and writer of children’s books. He went on to study photojournalism at Cardiff College and has worked as a photographer since 1997. His most recent works look for new ways of reporting on and portraying Africa. World Press Photo prizes in 2000 and 2002. He has held numerous workshops.
