PHILIP JONES GRIFFITHS (Wales, 1936)
Studied Pharmacy in Liverpool and practised in London before joining the Observer in 1961. As a freelance photojournalist, he covered Central Africa, the war in Algeria, and, most notably, Vietnam. His book Vietnam Inc., one of the most comprehensive accounts ever made of a war, was instrumental in mobilizing western opinion against American involvement in Vietnam. Jones Griffiths also photographed the Yom Kippur War and worked in Cambodia. In 1980 he moved to New York as President of Magnum Photos, a position he held for a record five years. His photographic reports have been published in the world's leading magazines. He has worked in over 140 countries. |
